What’s the Damage?

central5-19

Relatively speaking, the Wahoos had a good week last week. On three separate days, they had more runs than the other team by the time the game ended. Games 1 and 2 in Arlington marked the first time they did this in consecutive games since the first series of 2015 in Houston.

Unfortunately the Tribe’s scorching hot streak has gone for naught so far, as Lorde’s disciples in Kansas City went 4-3 last week and have won 6 of their last 10. All-Star closer Greg Holland is just getting back into the swing of things after a DL stint, which is a scary proposition for the opposition who already has to face a bullpen with the 7th best FIP in baseball whenever Mr. Yost picks up the phone. Also, this:

Pitching and defense, kids. Pitching and defense.

That-team-over-there-in-the-state-with-the-team-up-north took two of three from both the Twins and the Cardinals, owners of the best record in baseball, before dropping game 1 against Milwaukee last night. Miguel Cabrera decided to leave the yard for the 400th time in his career on Saturday, doing so 46 days before Hank Aaron did and bumping him up to #52 on baseball’s all-time list. Boob guy Justin Verlander threw a 45 pitch bullpen today as he inches closer and closer to returning to Detroit’s rotation, something I’m really not sure is a bad thing for the Tribe at this point in his career.

The Twins are still above .500 and I still don’t know why. Nothing lights a fire under somebody’s ass like facing the Indians, and 39-year-old Torii Hunter is still smoldering since he came to the Prog last Friday:  .367 AVG, 2 2B, 3 HR & 7 RBI. Second-baseman Brian Dozier seems to be heating up after a slow start too but I’m not looking up the stats for you guys.

And that leaves the White Sox, who are actually the hottest team in the division right now. Last night’s walk-off win brought their win streak up to 6 (I honestly didn’t know those could go that high). Jose Abreu, who captains the team of players I think are going to hit a moonshot every time they enter the box, has been their catalyst and is riding a 12-game hitting streak himself. Outfielder Avisail Garcia has as many hits as Matt Underwood has pronunciations of his name, and currently sits 4th in the AL in batting average (.338).

  • I’m afraid to write anything about Corey Kluber because he honestly scares me now so here’s some tweets:

I mean are you KIDDING ME? Your pitcher hasn’t given up a hit, has probably 15 strikeouts at this point, you haven’t been cheering all game and you decide to turn your back and try to start the most asinine cheer in all of sportsfandom. I will forever loathe section 180 at Progressive Field.

  • Jason Kipnis and Michael Brantley’s hot streaks have been well documented, so I’m not going to do any more documentation. Here’s where they both stand now in the American League:
    • AVG – Brantley .336 (5th), Kipnis .333 (8th)
    • OBP – Brantley .416 (3rd), Kipnis .399 (8th)
    • wOBA – Brantley .412 (4th), Kipnis .390 (12th)
    • K% – Brantley 5.8% (1st), Kipnis 12.1% (17th)

*Denotes absurd statistic

  • I’m just gonna leave this here…..

Things Francisco Lindor couldn’t fix:

1. The bullpen

2. Outfield, third base, second base, first base, catcher, pitcher defense

3. Giving up runs in the following half inning after scoring

4. Playing in the toughest division in baseball

5. Yan Gomes’ knee

Top 5 Longest Dingers in Progressive Field History

So while you were sleeping last night, Miami Marlins cyborg Giancarlo Stanton did this:

114 MPH off the bat, landed on the roof of the seats in left, 475 feet away. Fourth player ever to leave Dodger Stadium entirely. Adios, senor pelota.

That got me thinking. Since I’m completely out of positive thoughts to blog  there’s no Cavs game to distract us tonight we could all use some good vibes heading into Game 2 against the Cardinals tonight, why don’t we take a look at some of the longest moonshots in Prog history? Spoiler alert – there’s a lot of this:

I may or may not but most certainly did not check to see if I could find videos of all these before I started writing this. 0-1 so far. So here’s a video of Thome’s first walk-off homer of his career, from 1994:

Thereeeee we go. It’s almost like we didn’t even lose 8-3 last night.

4. 479 ft – Jim Thome, 7/17/00 vs. Houston
Off of: Wade Miller

…..yeah I’m 0-2 but I’ve had a couple good at-bats and have made a couple nice plays defensively. Thome went yard twice this game, both off this jabroni. On that note, here’s his bomb and FIRE bat flip from Game 5 of the 95 ALCS:

Tell it goodbye! Man that place was rockin’.

3. 481 ft – Manny Ramirez, for Boston, 7/26/07
Off of: Cliff Lee

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Cliff Lee looks up before he pitches to New York Yankees batter Hideki Matsui with two runners on base, two out, and a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning of their MLB American League baseball game at Yankee Stadium in New York May 7, 2008. I swear the top 2 have videos for them. But this one took some research so lay off me, I’m starving. First of all Manny hit two tank-pieces this game, one off Clifford and the other off our dear friend Jensen Lewis. I initially thought it was the one off Lewis, but it wasn’t, which is unfortunate because I had a hilarious picture to use for him, which I’ll share now:

Go Commodores. Secondly there’s some dinger debate on this one. The PDF I found from Wikipedia, so you know, gospel, listed the bomb as 481 feet. But ESPN’s Home Run Tracker (which is actually pretty cool but only goes back to 2006) had it pegged at 447. It doesn’t really matter since there’s no video and thus we’ll never know for sure so here’s Manny hitting a 3 run yackjob and setting a franchise record for RBI in a season (164) (!)

2. 485 ft – Mark McGwire, for Oakland, 4/30/97

Check it out, a video!

That ball…might not come back. This one’s a perfect snapshot of the steroid era: long, high and goddamn entertaining. And also long. Sweet Jesus.

1. 511 ft – Jim Thome, vs. Kansas City, 7/3/99
Off of: Don Wengert

I mean we all knew that was coming. If you’ve been through the new entrance in center field you’ve definitely seen the bat-pointing statue, and probably walked right over the plaque marking where this puppy landed. Here it is, with bonus Hammy call:

“Jim Thome has just left Jacobs Field, on to Eagle Avenue.”

Something tells me that one might not be matched for a while.

But AI, what’s the longest home run hit at The Prog THIS season, you ask?

442 ft – Alex Gordon, for Kansas City, 4/28/15

God. Damnit.

That yellow circle is the ball, Red? My brother-in-law. The blue circle is not me because I had to take a piss. Overall, not a great couple minutes of my life.

I Don’t Even Feel Like Winning Two Games In A Row Anyway: Tribe Notes 5/12

Side note, I dare you to search “indians suck” on Twitter.

What’s the Damage?

central5-12

Facepalm.

The Royals are only 5-5 in their last ten and still have a game over the second-place Kitties. Tribe fans can take some solace in the fact that it isn’t just us that Mike Moustakas is crushing this year, it’s everyone (.319/.338/.448). The same goes for pretty much their entire lineup, as the baby blue bullies lead the majors in hitting by a whopping 13 points.

Everyone’s (least) favorite felines are right in the mix per usual, although they’re on a two-game slide after dropping the last two games in KC this past weekend. David Price tripped over a bat like an IDIOT and strained his hammy, so he’ll miss his next start, and catcher Alex Avila has “loose bodies” in his left knee which may require surgery. You just hate to see that. Gotta keep those bodies tight, Al.

The Twins are four games over .500. Who let that happen?

twins

Right. Leave it to us to be assaulted by a 39-year-old and his band of misfits.

I can now accurately type Jeff Samardzija’s name without looking it up, since I own him in fantasy and his season has basically been a start followed by four days of me bitching. Struggling would be an understatement, for him and his new squad (although, go figure, they’re 3 for 5 against us this year). 2014 3rd overall pick Carlos Rodon (LHP) was brilliant in his first career start last week. He was born in 1992. In December. Lol.

Since moving to the leadoff spot on April 26:

.356/.441/.627, 5 2B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 8 BB, 6 K

In the month of May, he’s third in the majors in average and OBP and leads everyone with a 1.1 offensive WAR. When he made the All-Star team in 2013,  his best month was June, in which he hit:

.419/.517/.699, 12 2B, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 20 BB, 22 K

Dance, jump on it.

  • The past couple weeks have seen two Tribe starters heading in opposite directions. After a sickeningly hot start, Trevor Bauer has posted consecutive clunkers. He was tagged for 6 earned runs in 4.1 innings against Toronto on the 3rd, then another 5 this past weekend by the Twins. For those who watched, even those early starts were plagued by walks and the ever-present threat of the big inning, but Bauer was able to extinguish those threats with strikeouts. He hasn’t been able to do that recently. with a total of 8 strikeouts in his last three starts combined. His pitch mixes are the same-ish, given the fact that those are bound to vary with someone who a) has as many pitches and b) is as big of a “feel” pitcher as Bauer is. I still really like him and am hoping his bout with food poising is to blame for knocking him off track.

Danny Salazar is trending in the opposite direction. Check this stat:

Is that good? Did he break it?

In his five starts this year, he’s struck out 10, 11, 7, 9 and 11 batters. That’s 48 total, which is good for 7th in the majors. He also leads the bigs in K/9 and K%. Relying a lot less on his fastball than he has in the past, he’s mixing in his curve and change a lot more this year and making hitters look silly when he goes from 95 at the nipples to 80 in the dirt.

  • Just for shits and gigs, I thought I’d look at attendance numbers this season to see what impact the renovations (and, conversely, the product on the field) have had. So far in 2015 we’re averaging 15,928 fans at home games. That’s down from 18,428 last year and 19,661 in 2013. Obviously it’s still early, fans don’t go to 35 degree games in April and we haven’t been through a playoff push yet, so as I’m typing this now I realize this probably isn’t the most insightful paragraph I’ve ever written, but hey. This is Bottlegate folks.
