Browns v Raiders Monday Game Tape

4-3. I don’t care how you get there. I don’t care who you beat. I don’t care what the score was, you’re 4-3 and right in the thick of things in a very competitive AFC North. If you would have asked me back in August if I would be happy with a 4-3 record after 7 games, I would have said “Yes” so fast it would have made your freaking head spin. When was the last time the Browns were over .500 this far into the season? 2007? (That’s just a guess. I’m not looking it up. If someone wants to, be my guest). After 15 years of shitty football, it’s nice to have an actual, competent football team to cheer for. Can you imagine if the Browns would have blown this? With the most anticipated sporting season in Cleveland history starting Thursday, the Browns would have been an afterthought. Losing 2 games in a row to 2 winless opponents is no way to keep a fanbase satisfied. Am I happy with how the offense looked? No. Am I happy with how Brian Hoyer looked? Not happy but content. Do we need to be better on third down? Oh yes. Has the defense strung together three straight games where they’ve looked good as fuck? Absolutely. Now enough of me answering my own questions. Let’s look at the damn game tape.

I’m fine with ending the Travis Benjamin experiment. Put him at receiver full time… Dare I say bring back Josh Cribbs? He couldn’t do a worse job.

The rookies played well on defense. Gilbert made a couple of nice plays and Kirksey was all over the place knocking dudes around like this

A couple quick thoughts:

  • Any time the running game would like to come back, that’d be great.
  • Hopefully Billy Winn is back next week to combat the John Hughes injury (if his injury is bad)
  • Why are people bitching about the quarterback? 19-28 275 yards and a TD. Shut up. He played well.
  • Need to be better on third down if we want to beat the Buccaneers.
  • Mack, Cameron, Gordon. All Pro Bowlers, all didn’t contribute yesterday.
  • Like I said before, “Memo to the AFC, do NOT let this team be 6-4 of 7-3 by the time #12 comes back.”
  • Don’t look now but that’s three straight superb performances by the defense. Looks like Happy learned to putt.

Well that… sucked. I was terrified of this game going in and for good reason. The Browns were coming off of a big, emotional win vs. the Steelers last week and traveling to Jacksonville to face a winless “not as bad as their record shows” Jaguars team. Shit. 4-2 sounds so much better than 3-3 right now. I don’t even know where to start. That was bad all around (aside from Tashaun Gipson) Let’s look at the Game Tape.

Honest statement: I had NO IDEA what “highlights” to put in here from the Browns side. When a game produces SIX offensive points, your options are limited.

And instead of being up 9-0 at half we’re down 7-6. Pettine’s first coaching blunder of the year.

I want to disagree with him… but I just can’t. His Terrance West impression was pretty spot on too.

Nothing really happened in the 3rd quarter but the 4th quarter started out with the worst football play I’ve ever seen in my life. And to think I thought Brandon Weeden’s flip pass last year was bad.

Mingo punched Denard Robinson in the dick. Whatever, he went to Michigan and he should be used to it after losing to OSU all those years.

And then Walter Payton the Michigan QB takes it in for the TD

A couple plays later Hoyer threw the dagger interception. Sigh. And the Browns fall to 3-3.

The defense played well. 3 forced turnovers and only scoring 6 points is unacceptable. But I’m not gonna be all doom and gloom. This game sucked. Whatever. Gotta move on from it. Hopefully they got it out of their system. We’re 3-3 and have 2 very winnable games coming up at home. The offense needs to play better. They know that. We know that. Everyone knows that.

I don’t know what the full impact of losing Alex Mack will be but it sure looked like he was badly missed yesterday. The running game wasn’t working, Paul McQuistan looked like he’s never played football before, and Greco and Hoyer seemed to not be on the same page. I hope this can get corrected by the time Oakland comes to town.

I’m not going to be that guy but in Brian Hoyer’s last 2 games he’s a combined 24-58. Thats a 41% completion rate. Unacceptable. He threw behind receivers and missed open receivers for touchdowns. In this offense where we have to take advantage of every opportunity you can’t afford to make mistakes like that. IF Hoyer continues playing like this it’s time for #2. I think he’ll get pissed off, turn it around, and have a big game vs. Oakland next week.

I’m hungover, sunburned, my voice is gone, my hands are blistered from high fives and clapping… I’m tired. Sick. Kinda have the shakes. Might puke soon… and you know what? It’s all 100% worth it. That game yesterday was a BEATDOWN. A massacre. A bludgeoning. An extermination. A complete and utter decimation. There’s no other way to put it. The Browns were DOMINANT for 4 quarters. How many times have “dominant” and “Browns” been used in the same sentence since 1999? Once? Twice if any? It hasn’t been thrown around regularly since the 80s or early 90s I’m sure. If you’re keeping track at home, the Browns have outscored the Steelers 55-13 in the last six quarters of football. Fifty Five… To thirteen. That’s a score equivalent of the ’85 Bears playing the Permian Panthers JV team if the Permian Panthers JV team were all deaf, blind and quadruple amputees. Did I just compare the entire Steelers team to a 53 man roster of players with no arms or legs? Yup. You bet your sweet asscheeks I did.

We’re 3-2. Could easily be 5-0. Feels like 16-0. Have a realistic chance of getting to 6-2 (let’s not get ahead of ourselves though). I’m jacked up and you should be too. First Energy Stadium was rocking louder than it’s ever rocked before and good God almighty was it BANANAS in there. Let’s look at the damn game tape:
