Kevin Love explained his decision to stay in Cleveland to The Players’ Tribune

From ThePlayersTribune.com:

“Last week I announced here that I was re-signing with the Cavaliers. Today, the deal is inked and I can officially say I’m going to stay a Cav.

Now that free agency is over, I get to focus on the game that I grew up loving. The same game I grew up watching on TV and playing in the driveway against my dad. I talked to my parents and other people that I trust about my plans and they all said basically the same thing: We just want you to be happy. And that was it for me because I just want to focus on basketball.

So that’s what I’m going to do, focus on basketball and get back on the court ready for the start of the season.

But before that, I wanted to break down some of my thoughts and expand on my announcement last week … starting with the gut-wrenching feeling I had watching the Warriors hoist the trophy after Game 6 of the Finals.

Check it out here:”

God DAMNIT I love this man. First he verbally commits to returning to Cleveland, then he gets naked for us, then he reaffirms his….love….for us the morning after one of the crazier sports plot lines in recent memory in the DeAndre Jordan saga. I will hereby refer to July as the Month of Love until his number zero jersey hangs from the rafters of Quicken Loans Arena.

Kevin’s just a different type of dude. He’s a chill Cali bro who doesn’t really play the media like most other superstars do. You can tell in post games when he’s talking with his head down in front of his locker, and even in this video when they pan to him picking his fingers. He’s just not that comfortable with the song and dance. But he sure does love the game of basketball. He lights up in this interview when he talks about it. Playing it, watching it, learning about it from his dad. He just wants to put all this business behind him and get back out on the court. That’s a guy I want on my squad seven days a week.

Their fans are just so great. They’re die hard. As we like to say, they’re “all in”. They love their athletes. They love their Cavaliers.”

From ESPN.com:

ON HIS SHOULDER INJURY:

I was really looking forward to the playoffs. This injury is one of the hardest things I’ve dealt with. It was really tough to go out the way that I did. I knew when it happened I probably wasn’t going to be able to return to play. But when I heard the news that I was going to have to get surgery, and be out for four to six months, it was a big, big blow to me.

Of course I was pissed. I was very emotional. And that was seen and heard, what I said [about Olynyk’s allegedly dirty play]. I wanted to make this deep run with these guys and be out there on the floor. That was very tough, from a human aspect

You don’t want to have any bad blood; the NBA is an elite fraternity. As time went on, I was upset, but I always knew that I was going to get to the point where I could talk to Kelly and say, “Hey, man. All good.” So we could move on. So I asked my agent to get me Kelly’s number. And that was it, just a text exchange: “Just want to let you know, no hard feelings. It’s all part of the game.” It was very genuine. He told me he appreciated it. I didn’t want him to worry about what anyone was saying these days. I expressed that I was initially very upset, which I thought was understandable. But I don’t think he is that type of player. We’re cool.

ON HIS WEIGHT STRUGGLES:

Oh, you couldn’t keep me out of the cupboards. Especially sixth through eighth grade, I was always very hungry. That’s when I was growing. And my mom was a great cook; I was very spoiled when I was young. Her fettuccine alfredo? Yeah, you eat that on a regular basis and you’re not gonna be in the Body Issue.

ON FITNESS:

I’m not going to go any lower than my weight now. I know that I have to play inside; I have to contend with people who are bigger, faster, stronger than me. But I’m trying to add things to my game. I’m trying to be able to run faster and have fresh legs every day. I’m fit, and I’m focused.”

I think there’s more Q&A in the article but I can’t say for sure because I watched the video then I passed out.

Sweet Baby Ray’s on a toasted onion roll, he’s a specimen. He looks kind of gangly at times when he’s sporting a sweaty undershirt and baggy number 0 on the court but this little spread here leaves no doubt: I would not kick him out of bed for eating crackers. Ritz family size, have at it Kev. I’ll pop open each sleeve myself.

And to Kevin….I’m so sorry.

Just like he said he was going to do all season, Kevin Love is returning to the Cavaliers

Unfinished Business

Weird. It’s like for the past 8 months he’s been saying the same thing and saying he’ll be playing for the Cavaliers in the foreseeable future. It’s almost as if people have been blatantly ignoring HIS OWN WORDS and saying he was looking to play for the Celtics or return to LA and play with Kobe and the Lakers. Man, if only Kevin gave some warning throughout the season that he planned on being back with the Cavs, then this wouldn’t be as much of a shock as it is. If only someone had some quotes throughout the season where Kevin stated he would be a Cavalier long term. If only someone collected those quotes and posted them all in one blog.
