Bottlegate’s Week 2 Top 10 College Football Teams And The Top Heisman Hopefuls

Last Saturday’s slate of games was pretty terrible overall so a lot of the shakeup in the top 10 is mostly because I was bored and a lot of teams underperformed vs vastly inferior teams.

Let’s go

10. Arkansas

Going on the road and beating a good TCU team in double overtime was one of the better wins of the weekend. I don’t expect the Razorbacks to be here long but if they can beat Texas A&M in 2 weeks then they might be for real.

https://twitter.com/abdulamemon/status/774798398927011840

Next up vs Texas State

9. Tennessee

Yes they needed overtime to beat App State in week one but that was an absolute decimation of Virginia Tech at the Battle At Bristol. Plus Tennessee gave us this classic video which instantly catapults them into the top 10

Image result for the battle at bristol

8. Clemson

Kind of getting a “2015 Ohio State” vibe with this year’s Clemson team. Tons of expectations rest on the shoulders of the Clemson players this season and they’ve underperformed in their first 2 games. Sure a win on the road at Auburn is nice but only beating Troy by 6 at home? Need to see a lot more out of the Tigers.

Next up: vs South Carolina State

7. Wisconsin

Didn’t have the Badgers ranked last week but I’m starting to like what I’m seeing out of Bart Houston. Plus it’s a QB named “Bart” playing football in Wisconsin. That’s gotta be worth a spot or two by itself. The Badgers have the best win among Big 10 teams and probably do deserve to be the highest ranked team in the Big 10, but I just can’t put them over OSU or Michigan.

They take on Georgia State on Saturday

6. Texas

With Clemson’s exile out of the top 5, Texas moves up a spot. They beat UTEP 41-7. Didn’t do anything spectacular this weekend but they took care of business.  They have an interesting late game at Cal on Saturday night before they start their Big 12 schedule.

5. Michigan

Has a team ever been dropped out of the top 10 altogether because their coach was caught on camera eating his boogers? Because that’s what I think should happen. If Jim eats anything else that comes out of his body next weekend I’m dropping Michigan indefinitely from any future rankings.

Michigan hosts Colorado on Saturday.

4. Ohio State

The Bucks honestly didn’t look too great in their win over Tulsa and still won by 45 points. The defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown yet and will have their hands full this coming Saturday vs. Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma. I’ve had this game circled for like two years so it’ll be VERY interesting to see what plays out in Norman.

3. Houston

The Cougs! Have them over Ohio State and Michigan because they have the more impressive win. If OSU can beat Oklahoma this weekend, they’ll jump Houston but for now the Cougars are #3.

Houston has a nice little challenge Thursday night when they travel to take on Cincinnati on ESPN.

2. Alabama

The fact that Nick Saban was about to murder Lane Kiffin on the sidelines while the Tide were 28 with under a minute left was almost enough to put Alabama in the top spot. They handily beat Western Kentucky and will take on Kent State next Saturday.

1.Florida State

They were my #1 team last week and did nothing over the weekend to change that. My Heisman darkhorse Deondre Francois had another nice game throwing for 262 yards and 3 TDs.

Huuuuuge game this weekend at AP #10 Louisville. Can the Seminoles stop Lamar Jackson and keep their top spot or will Louisville break into the top 10?

Dropped out: Georgia (only beat Nicholls by 2 at home), Stanford (didn’t play)

Heisman Top 5

5. Christian McCaffrey

Stanford didn’t play. According to Topbet.com, he’s the Heisman favorite at 3-1.

4. Deondre Francois

262 yards passing 3 TDs. Still unlisted right now. A big game vs. Louisville would do wonders for his campaign.

3. JT Barrett

149 yards passing & 55 yards rushing & 2 TDs. Listed at 6-1.

2. DeShone Kizer

156 yards passing 2 TDS & 35 yards rushing 1 TD. Listed at 30-1, up from 40-1 from last week. Riding the Kizer For Heisman bandwagon hard this season, get your bets in now.

1.Lamar Jackson

He did this.

And threw for 411 and 1 TD and also rushed for 199 yards and 4 TDs. He’s played shit competition but there’s no denying he’s the favorite right now.

Got a GREAT slate of games this weekend:

Florida State @ Louisville, Michigan State @ Notre Dame, Alabama @ Ole Miss, Ohio State @ Oklahoma… Games that will definitely impact the top 10. Much better than what we got last weekend.

Go Bucks.

Bottlegate’s Top 10 College Football Teams And The Top 5 Heisman Hopefuls

College football is back! The preseason polls don’t mean a damn thing (except for Alabama). Notre Dame is losing heartbreaking games, an Urban Meyer team is scoring a lot of points, double overtimes, drunk fans, Heisman hopefuls, the GameDay crew… WE’RE BACK, BABY. It’s the best time of the year and if you’re like me you watched enough college football to make your eyes bleed this past weekend.

Here is Bottlegate’s weekly Top 10 teams in the country from what my eyes told me. I’ll try and have these up around every Tuesday before the AP Poll comes out once we get back into the swing of things.

10. Texas A&M

Beat a ranked team and a good quarterback in UCLA and Jacob Rosen. After Trevor Knight’s game I wouldn’t be surprised if Katy Perry tries to reignite this lost romance since Trevor and that Duck Dynasty girl broke up. Johnny Manziel is back taking classes in College Station, maybe a little of his Johnny magic rubs off on Trevor Knight and A&M can be the darkhorse of the SEC.  Huge matchup for the Aggies next weekend when they host Prairie View A&M.

9. Stanford

Christian McCaffrey had a very ho hum 166 yards rushing and receiving and the Cardinal beat the Wildcats 26-13. Nothing flashy or sexy but that’s who Stanford is. Plus their former quarterback just joined the Browns practice squad so we’ll throw Stanford in the top 10. Big primetime matchup next weekend vs. a USC team that just got embarrassed.

8. Georgia

Nick Chubb is BACK. After 1 week Chubb looks like he’ll be invited to New York in December as a Heisman finalist. I imagine that within a couple games Kirby Smart will name Jacob Eason the full time starter and the Georgia offense will really start to take off once he gets some game experience. Big game vs. the powerhouse Nicholls Colonels next week in Athens.

7. Texas

Notre Dame v Texas was by far the game of the weekend. Do I think Texas deserves a spot in the top 10 after just one game and opening up the season unranked? Not necessarily but winning that kind of game is worth the #7 ranking. One of their quarterbacks also beat the odds

And a note to all you Notre Dame fans- Now you guys can rest easy. ND got their inevitable soul crushing and demoralizing loss out of the way early in the season and you guys can now coast through 2016 without being stressed every Saturday. Their CFB Playoff hopes are essentially done due to Brian Kelly not rolling with one of the best QBs in the country full time.

Next up: UTEP

6. Michigan

I still don’t see the hype with Michigan this season because they haven’t been relevant in like a decade on the field… but there’s this Harbaugh guy… and even as a diehard OSU fan I have to be honest with myself- Jim Harbaugh is awesome for college football. I won’t like Jim Harbaugh for that last week in November but I’ll be a fan the other 51 weeks of the year.

Michigan hosts UCF on Saturday.

5. Houston

In their last two games Houston has beaten Florida State and Oklahoma. I’m admittedly not very familiar with the Cougars but every time I see them on TV they look like they’re having the most fun a team’s ever had. That’s a big component of the Bottlegate rankings.  If Houston stays undefeated they’re getting into the playoff. Barnburner vs the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday.

4. Ohio State

I don’t care if it was Bowling Green, 77 points is nothing to sneeze at. Mike Weber won’t be Zeke but he showed some signs of being the next big Ohio State running back. This team is athletic and young as hell and should get better game after game. The Bucks host Tulsa next Saturday at 3:30 and will probably win by 30. Oklahoma will be a good measuring stick for this team.

3. Clemson

Clemson almost lost to an Auburn team that went 7-6 last year. Auburn may surprise a few people this year, but this Clemson team that almost won the national championship last season, and that has the preseason Heisman favorite under center has no business almost getting upset by a third tier SEC team.

2. Alabama

We saw the Tide absolutely decimate a pretty decent USC team in their first game since winning the national championship last season. Bama would get the #1 spot but I’m biased against the SEC and this wasn’t a true out of conference road game. They’ll probably be #1 in a few weeks however because I think this team is pretty terrifying. Bama hosts Western Kentucky and their giant trash can mascot on Saturday.

1. Florida State

After the first half on Monday night I was ready to drop Florida State out of the top ten altogether. Second half Florida State was another story. Deondre Francois and Dalvin Cook have a chance to be the most lethal backfield in college football this season. I think this was the most impressive win of the opening weekend. The Noles will have to learn how to win a game without Jameis Winston giving halftime speeches, however.

HUGE matchup vs the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Saturday.

https://twitter.com/Insane_Athletes/status/773265228280700928

Heisman (in no order)

Deshone Kizer

215 yards passing and 5 TDs. 77 yards rushing and 1 TD. Bovada has Kizer listed at +4,000 to win the Heisman. That might be a GREAT value bet.

Deondre Francois

33-for-52 for 420 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers vs Ole Miss. His Heisman odds are unlisted on Bovada but when they list them this might be a great bet to throw a few bucks on.  Those Freshman Florida State QBs do pretty well.

JT Barrett

379 total yards and seven touchdowns vs Bowling Green. Bovada lists JT as +550.

Nick Chubb

222 yards rushing and 2 TDs against North Carolina. Chubb is listed at +1,000.

Probably Christian McCaffrey

166 total yards and 2 TDs. Bovada lists him at +400, the best odds of any player to win the Heisman.

I don’t expect much movement next week in the top 10 because unlike week 1, week 2 is filled with cupcakes for all of the good teams in CFB.

And someone alert me once Deondre Francois’s odds get listed on Bovada.

AI’s 2015 Top 10 Hottest Cleveland Professional Athletes

It’s that time of year again, folks. Spending time with friends and family, gift giving with loved ones, judging the hotness of Cleveland athletes based on their looks, personality and athletic ability.

Let’s start with a refresher:

Athletes were judged in four categories. AT THEIR BEST, how good looking he/she is at his best on a scale of 1-10. AT THEIR WORST, how gross he/she looks at his worst on a scale of 1-10 (10 still being the best looking). PERSONALITY, what type of person he/she is, scale of 1-10. This can include playing style, fan interaction, social media presence, community outreach, etc. ATHLETIC ABILITY, how talented is he/she as an athlete on a scale of 1-3. We decided to make athletic ability worth less, so that our best athletes would have a slight advantage, but not a huge one seeing as this is a contest based on looks.

Ties were decided by the higher AT THEIR BEST score. If that was also the same, the higher AT THEIR WORST score was chosen.

Last year, California dreamboat Jordan Cameron edged out Kevin Love by a whopping 2.25 points to earn the inaugural AI’s Hottest Cleveland Professional Athlete crown. A quick review of those results:

ai2014

Cameron has since moved on to the Miami Dolphins, where he enjoyed virtually no success this season in the first of a 2-year contract. Other drop outs from last year to this year include:

  • Joey Hishon, now playing his hockey for the San Antonio Rampage
  • Spencer Lanning, a free agent after spending three days with the Bears in October
  • Joe Harris, who looks like he belongs more on the Monmouth bench than the Cavs
  • Nick Swisher, who the Indians paid the Braves $15 million to take off their hands
  • Justin Gilbert, who earned the first ever “zero” score in my two years of doing this for Athletic Ability

I also made a little change this year when it came to Athletic Ability. Last year we had 5 total guys score a perfect 3 (LeBron, Love, Irving, Kluber, Brantley). Obviously LeBron is a 3, and I decided that since he’s the best player in his sport, nobody else should really be on that level. Kluber and Kyrie might be in the discussion at their respective positions but it isn’t as clear cut as it is with Bron.

6 spots up for grabs. Let’s get it going.
First Three Out

Matthew Dellavedova, Guard, Cleveland Cavaliers

delly

Jordan Poyer, Defensive Back, Cleveland Browns

power

Travis Coons, Kicker, Cleveland Browns

(Really says something that the only two Browns that appear on this list are a reserve safety and a kicker in the “Last Three Out” category)

When Mike asked me to do this list last year my mind sort of automatically went to dudes? I think it’s cause we’re constantly blogging about our big three male sports teams, watching them play, listening to people talk about them on the radio and making small talk about them at work, and we’re now 12 years removed from the Rockers. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I wanted to get some ladies in the mix this year but I didn’t really know any off the top of my head. At first I thought golfers but the Cleveland golf company made Googling things rather difficult. MMA was the second sport that came to mind with all the Ronda Rousey hoopla lately. Enter, Jessica “Evil” Eye.

She’s originally from Rootstown, and I don’t know where that is either but she went to Akron and Wikipedia says her current residence is in Cleveland, so, good enough for me. I also don’t know D about MMA but there are articles out there with quotes from Dana White that mention her and Rousey in the same sentences, so she must be doing something right. In fact, the only thing I could really knock her for doing wrong are those cornrows. I guess the braided hair and black eyes come with the territory but she sure does clean up nice. She also did this to another human being once:

Whoa.

That first picture is absolute smoke patrol. The big brother, national smoke patrol that gets called into a smoke patrol investigation when the local smoke patrol can’t get the job done, and the local smoke patrol gets pissed off cause the national smoke patrol is stealing their smoke and stepping on their toes. Code word clearance smoke patrol.

He leads the Monsters in goals and is third in points, and he’s only 21, so there’s still some potential there, but I couldn’t justify giving him 0.75 for ability and putting him on the same level as Jared Cunningham, Moe Williams and K’Waun Williams. You’re all lucky he’s Swedish so I can’t understand his Twitter and judge his personality or he might have been staring #1 right in the eyeballs.

If points were awarded for every time I’ve dreamed about a player laying in bed at night, Frankie would have won this puppy in a landslide. The Indians might be a frustrating team to root for but finally having an unquestioned stud live up to expectations at probably the most important position on the field is just so awesome. Did that cloud my judgement of his physical appearance? You might be able to make that argument. I’d counter with the fact that I very well may have sold him short in the personality department. On the field, he played with a fire we just haven’t seen in a while:

lindorgif1

He’s well-liked in the clubhouse and doing great things in the community too:

I heart him. Sue me.

7. Michael Brantley, Outfielder, Cleveland Indians

Smooth wins the tiebreaker over Lindor here with a higher “at their best” score. While Frankie seems like a West 6th bar hop chick chasing kind of dude, Brantley is much more my speed. I want to wear a hole in a bar stool and get black out drunk off of Miller Lite drafts while complaining about Ray Farmer with Smooth. He’s the George Clooney to Lindor’s Bieber.  That’s no knock on the Biebs mind you, it’s just funny to think about how Brantley is looked at as a veteran leader for guys like Lindor and Urshela when he’s just 28 years old. He’s been around so long he’s starting to get the “I know how to fix things with my bare hands” look in my eyes, and I’m not at all mad about it.

Say what you want about his outfit choices but you can’t deny he consistently looks good. Has to be one of the best dressed in the NBA.

hated to do it but I had to dock him a little bit on personality because of the contract situation this past summer. He’s still tied for the third highest personality score on the list but that little knock allowed this next guy to jump him from last year…

5. LeBron James, Forward, Cleveland Cavaliers

At their best – 7

If Michael Brantley is George Clooney, LeBron James is Kirk Douglas. He’s seen all there is to be seen in his dozen years in the NBA. And he looks like it.

Bron is not the best looking person on this list. In fact, he has the lowest “at their best” score out of all 10 members. He says things sometimes about leading a team or being the best that make you cringe. He gets very close to being undefendable to Cavs haters with how much he complains to referees. He uses hashtags like #GrownMan on social media.

And he’s beautiful.

The big picture, the net result of all those things plus his fade away jumpers, his and 1’s and his monstrous slams, is beautiful.

Went over this last year, and probably will every year I do this thing, but Klubes best and worst scores will always be the same, because robots always look the same. Just a normal good looking cyborg with an arm like a f*cking cannon. But a self-aware one at that, which is why I always score him so high for personality. Big fan of self-awareness. And beards. And I also really appreciate the work he does at night after games.

Kyrie moves his way into the top 3 this year for many of the same reasons he was at 4 in 2014. He’s one of the best point guards in the NBA. His Uncle Drew commercials are as good as it gets. He’s a solid, albeit unspectacular looking dude.

But you gotta love the way he went about coming back from the knee injury last year in the playoffs. He could have felt sorry for himself, done his rehab behind closed doors, sat in a suite at home games instead of sitting on the bench. Nope. Even though he was in a suit up until a few nights ago, Kyrie has been one of the most visible Cavs through the first two months of the season. Him and Shump built a nice little rapport as they worked toward getting healthy together, something I don’t think I saw between them last season. Just two injured players, stealing the show on 70’s night.

That’s why his personality is the highest on this list, and why he’s my third hottest Cleveland professional athlete.

I caught some flack last year for having Kip at #3 and to be honest I still have no idea why. The guy grows a FABULOUS beard. Just killer. One of those faces that was just meant for it. He’s got above average swag on the field and solid swag off it. He’s a big sports fan (Chicago Blackhawks), loves video games and is a great follow on all social media.

Not to mention the fact he’s coming off his second All-Star game appearance and was American League Player of the Month in May. To me, that’s about as close to the total package as you can get.

Why, Kevin? WHY WHY WHY. The perm and overgrown beard was fun for a minute. Let it all out for Movember. Good, grand, wonderful. Sleeves for headbands! Ha!

But I think I speak for the entire city and, quite frankly, humanity as a whole when I say – It’s time to turn the page. Get the clippers out and give me my short haired scruffy bearded Kevin back. Please. That’s my Christmas wish this year.

It also says quite a bit about Kevin that he can subject us to a look like that for the past two months and still win the title of AI’s 2015 Hottest Cleveland Professional Athlete pretty handily. I might have to implement some sort of weighted scoring system to make things interesting next year because Kevin’s a goddamn aesthetic juggernaut. It was over before it even started.

That’s a wrap, folks. In summation:
