OSU, Michigan hoops help bring cheer to Lloyd Carr’s grandson

From CBS Sports:

“That’s a Wednesday night post from Tammi Carr — the mother of a 5-year-old little boy named Chad Carr. And though there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Chad, I’m certain you know his grandfather, Lloyd Carr, the legendary former Michigan football coach.

Sad story coming.

Chad was diagnosed with a rare and inoperable form of brain cancer in September 2014. He was initially given about nine months to live. Courageously, he beat that projection. But things have taken a bad turn recently. Chad can no longer walk. His breathing has worsened. His speech is sporadic. Doctors think the end is near. So Tammi and her husband, former Michigan quarterback Jason Carr, started Chad on hospice care this week.

At this point, frankly, there is little anybody can do. But that didn’t stop the Michigan men’s basketball staff and the Ohio State men’s basketball staff from coming together Wednesday night to try to lift Chad’s spirits in even the smallest way. Representatives from both schools — it was OSU coach Thad Matta’s wife, Barbara, who came up with the idea, I’m told — arranged to have Chad’s home decorated with Christmas lights, proving that even rivals can put aside their differences when their differences don’t really matter in the real world.”

Whew boy. It’s a dusty friday here at Bottlegate

How big of an absolute shame is it that these stories take a back seat to garbage like Greg Hardy and the state of daily fantasy sports in New York? LeBron James penned a heartfelt letter to a 19-year-old with a condition that prevents most people from seeing their 20’s. Ohio State and Michigan set one of the biggest rivalries in all of sports aside to bring some holiday cheer to the sick grandson of a coach that beat the Buckeyes 6 times in 12 years. These are the things I want to be reading about, national media. Not how much Todd Gurley costs in DFS this week.

It’s like the last scene of Christmas Vacation where Aunt Bethany sings the National Anthem. Everyone drops what they’re doing, ignores all the events/felonies of the night and comes together to honor the greatest country in the world. Sure, Eddie kidnapped Clark’s boss because he cut Christmas bonuses. And yeah, the Browns do play in Pittsburgh this Sunday in front of, well, our least favorite fan base in the country. But at the end of the day, we’re all just one big group of sports fans standing in our front lawn with the authorities on Christmas Eve. Let’s sing the National Anthem a little more often.

Headline: Quarterback Of The Best Team In The Country Is Calm & Polite During His Arrest

What? No juicy headline to get your blood flowing? Sorry. Here you go:

jt1

jt2

jt3

jt4

So when I saw all of these tweets and headlines earlier in the day I thought to myself “Damn, not a good look for JT to pull the ‘Do you know who I am’ card.”

But then I got home and found the video of the arrest (click there because I’m incompetent and don’t know how to embed a TMZ video).

So I watched it…That’s it?

With everything I read earlier today I expected a belligerent dude screaming at a police officer. I expected to see someone who thought he was invincible talking down to the CPD telling them things like “You can’t arrest me, I’m the quarterback at Ohio State!”

But nope. All we got was a 20 year old guy fully cooperating with police officers in probably one of the lowest moments of his life. So he told the officers that he was QB1 for the Buckeyes, you wouldn’t do that either? If I was 20 years old and the face of the #1 team in the country you bet that’d the first thing out of my mouth if a cop asked me anything.

“Sir do you know why I pulled you over?”

“QB1, Ohio State Buckeyes.”

To criticize someone for that is just dumb. It’s like using an FOP card on steroids. If any of us could pull that card we would. People always say things to get out of tickets; girls cry, guys say they have to take a shit. It’s nothing new. Sorry he didn’t want to go to jail?

Also, that cop laughing about Cardale coming to pick JT up was kind of a dickish move.

JT Barrett arrested for OVI early Saturday morning

From elevenwarriors.com:

“According to two sources within the Columbus Police Department, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while impaired (OVI) early Saturday morning near campus.

Barrett, 20, was arrested near High and Tompkins, just north of Campus after policed noticed the player attempt to avoid an OVI checkpoint in the area. Per CPD sources, Barrett was cooperative and blew into a breathalyzer, registering slightly over Ohio’s legal limit of 0.08 blood-alcohol concentration.

The quarterback was released to his teammate, fellow quarterback Cardale Jones, who provided Barrett a ride home.”

WELP! That’s nice to wake up to on a Saturday morning. File this under “things I didn’t think would ever happen in one million years.” If you told me a player from one of my teams got a DUI and gave me 100 guesses, I don’t think I’d say  JT if you gave me an additional 100. All you hear about is his this kid’s character and leadership abilities, hence being named one of the 6 captains on Ohio State as a sophomore. Then he’s finally named QB1 before last week’s 49-7 drubbing of Rutgers and BAM! DUI. Woof.

We’ll see how this plays out, but apparently Barrett could be suspended for two weeks under Ohio State’s student-athlete drug and alcohol program. That’d put him out for the Minnesota and Illinois games, and firmly behind Cardale heading into the Michigan State game.

Happy Saturday guys!

UPDATE: Barrett has already been suspended for the Minnesota game. That was quick.
